As a space shaped by history and tradition, San Francisco' s Chinatown holds conversations around gender and identity that are unfolding in new ways. This forum brings together LGBTQ members of the Chinese community and their allies, who, from diverse upbringings and cultural contexts, share personal stories of self-identification, family relationships, and lived social experiences.

How could we begin to see one another through traditions and social changes? What different experiences of coming out, silence, and expression have shaped those of us raised in varying social environments? We hope this will be not only a space for sharing, but also a space for listening, dialogue, and mutual understanding.

We warmly welcome members of the LGBTQ community, allies, Chinatown residents, and all who care about questions of gender and culture to join us.

What we' ll cover

  • Local experiences of LGBTQ immigrants and the challenges faced by community organizations;

  • Looking back on 30 years of LGBTQ advocacy and change in China, what has been achieved, what strategies were used, and what challenges remain;

  • How media, art, and academic research contribute to LGBTQ activism and community engagement?

English & Chinese
